Study motivation

Posted by DareDevilGuy Oct. 15, 2007 @ 6:13 AM EDT

As a bunch of you may know I started the Dutch equivalant of college this year (one grade lower than university however still quite challenging). I'm in my seventh week now and I've got a week off. I've already given a couple of presentations and acquired some pretty high grades for a first-years student. After this week off I have my first real "test" about communication. Now I'm not really worried at all about this, it's easy for me, just comes natural which is why I chose this study in the first place. However in the tenth week (so in three weeks) my first testing period is here. It'll have 4 tests for me and a couple of essay's to turn in which shouldn't prove a difficulty.
Now my problem is, I got a lot to learn. Four tests don't seem much but one test alone has me studying 400 pages of raw information about psychology. This test will be made of 100 questions which I have to answer in 60 minutes (however all yes or no questions). I need to get 76 right or I'll fail. Now, I have been given a test to see what kind of questions will come up. Well, they're all about the goddamned details. Which is why I have already begun studying this shit (of course I've already read it all before except for one chapter which we will handle next week in class because it's tough as shit) however pumping 400 pages of detail in my head doesn't seem easy.
Apart from this there's another test about a book of roughly 200 pages all about the history of psychology. This test should be easier as it'll only be 30 "yes or no" questions. The other two tests are just pains in the asses, both about 100 pages of bullshit I don't care much for.
Now the main issue is of course the big-ass 400 page test. I lack the motivation to keep on studying. Apart from studying I'd like to use some of my free time for other things I haven't been able to do much lately, like hang out with my mates, with my girl or just chill. I finished for today at roughly 12 PM because my head is about to explode due me working through my communications test too much. I hardly touched my 400-page book yet as of last friday.

So I ask you, how do I motivate myself? This study is made for me, I'm sure of it, however after reading those questions I am shitting my pants because I knew roughly half of it, the half which was closest to what we discussed recently (so chapter 1, 2, 3 etc. I hardly remember the details from).

What do I do newgrounds?

Get ANGRY!!

Seriously, for some reason I can focus and work really well on academic stuff when I am right pissed. I don't know why.

To get angy start doing knuckle pushups and think about that one person who dumped you and started nasty rumors. It happens to everyone so just run with it.

Don't forget to calm down afterwards (think happy thoughts) or you will never get any sleep. Sleep is good for your brain.

Oh and turn off your internet, wireless, and whatever, keep the distractions down.

Then get ANGRY when taking the tests, because memory is state (emotion) dependent. Keep that concept in mind becuase it might be on your test, it was on a lot of mine when I did my undergraduate in Psychology.

The reason it worked well for you is most likely because you made a connection between the things you studied and the current emotional state you were in. As if studying with a certain smell and having that smell on the test aswell. Yeah, it works. I usually use music for it but I'm not allowed to do that in this college (no music during tests).
However I can't focus when angry, sad or whatever. I study best after just doing something that makes me happy (visiting girlfriend per example). However, I lack the time to do so every time.

You're asking NG... Well you just made your first mistake.

A: NewGrounds consists of 90% ignorant children.
B: Most of them have never seen a 400 page book.

I recommend taking away all possible distractions... Television, block websites on your comp, etc. But that of course could lead to you playing with a piece of lint for several hours. Good luck.

I <3 the Netherlands. Been there twice now, a very nice place indeed.

Anyway, don't shit your pants if you're good at what you're studying. Try making a study plan to designate time to studying so you know when to stop having leisure time and start studying. That's always worked for me when I have big exams or tests coming up. Good luck on them aswell.
